DGT fees for exchanging a driving licence

The exchange carries a single state fee, and the amount depends on whether your case requires practical driving tests. If it does not, which is usual for motorcycle and car categories, you pay fee 2.3. If it does, typical for lorry and bus, you pay fee 2.1. The amounts come from the official DGT catalogue.

The official amounts

FeeWhat the DGT catalogue says it coversAmount
2.3Obtaining a licence by exchange, where the exchange does not require practical driving tests28.58 €
2.1Obtaining a licence after examinations or by an exchange that does require practical driving tests93.12 €
2.2Obtaining licencias de conducir44.14 €
4.3Extending the validity of a licence24.34 €

The middle column translates the wording of the DGT fee catalogue, linked at the foot of this page. Fees are updated by regulation, so before paying it is worth opening the catalogue and checking today's figure.

Careful with the figure 28.87 €. It circulates on gestoría and directory sites. The official DGT catalogue, which we downloaded while preparing this page, states 28.58 € twice. Go by the catalogue, not by summaries.

Which fee applies to you

Rule of thumb: if your licence only covers categories A and B, the exchange usually needs no practical tests and the fee is 2.3. If it includes C or D, additional tests are normally required and the fee becomes 2.1.

It is not universal: what is required depends on the specific agreement with your country, and the DGT country table states the tests for each. Check your country in the list of countries with an agreement before paying, because a fee paid under the wrong heading has to be paid again.

How to pay

The fee can be bought and updated on the DGT e-office using an electronic certificate, Cl@ve PIN or Cl@ve permanente. The miDGT app also accepts credit and debit cards and Bizum, and direct debit is available.

If the procedure is done in person, the fee can be paid at the office by card, never in cash, or a previously purchased fee can be applied.

What is paid on top of the fee

  • Medical fitness report, issued by a driver assessment centre, priced by the centre itself, usually 25 to 75 € in Valencia.
  • Sworn translation of the licence, where the document requires it.
  • Gestoría fees if you delegate the file. Ours already include the DGT fee: 264.99 € for A and B and 343.64 € for C and D.
